From Adversity to Adventure: The Inspiring Journey of Aaron Baker
Our Founder’s Story
The journey of Aaron Baker, Athlete, Author, Speaker, and founder of the Adversity into Adventure Foundation and Advocate for Spinal Cord Injury, is the manifestation of the potential we all possess inside our spirits. In 1999, Aaron suffered a severe spinal cord injury that ended his career as an active professional motorcycle racer and forever changed the course of his life. His prognosis was so grim, that doctors said he'd never feed himself again. However, Aaron was an exception and showed that hard work can sometimes conquer the toughest of challenges.
Turning Adversity into Adventure
Aaron has devoted his life to integrating neurological research, rehabilitation, and recreation. Inspired by his own journey, experiences, and professional undertakings, he illustrates how the 3R ethos—research, Rehabilitation, and Recreation—can considerably improve the quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries.
Sharing His Story
Aaron recently stopped in Phoenix to tell his story at the Ability360 center. He discussed at length the mental health and emotional battles he faced post-accident, praising his mother for her positivity as she helped him through the darkest days of recovery. The impact of Aaron's journey speaks to many, as he uses his platform for spinal cord injury research awareness and fundraising.
Living His Words
Aaron's advocacy style is more than lip service. He actively participates in sports and has taken on global challenges like these by adopting specialized sports equipment. His goal is to raise funds and create awareness about spinal cord injuries, proving that one can lead a fun-filled life even with physical restrictions.
In his own words, Aaron stated, "I'm not just here speaking because I've read about these things. I want to literally push the pedals, endure the heat, live these words, and be the example for my younger self."
For others who may be going through a similar state of pain, he advises surrounding themselves with supportive people and taking things one step at a time. His journey inspires countless individuals to believe in their own potential and to never give up, no matter the challenges they face.
